Beard Transplant in Bristol

At Hair Transplant Bristol, beard transplantation uses FUE to move follicular units from the scalp donor zone to the face. Grafts are implanted at the precise angle and direction that matches the natural growth pattern for each specific zone of the beard, whether that is the moustache, chin patch, cheeks, or jaw line. The result is permanent beard hair that behaves exactly like native facial hair.

Why Men Choose Beard Transplantation

Patchy beard growth is the most common reason. Some areas of the face simply lack the follicle density to produce full coverage, regardless of age or hormone levels. Beard transplantation places follicles directly into those areas, creating coverage that was never there before.

Other patients seek beard transplantation to restore hair in areas affected by scarring from acne, burns, or trauma. Trans men on testosterone therapy often develop uneven facial hair and use beard transplantation to fill the zones that have not responded fully to hormones. At our Bristol clinic we treat all of these cases.

The Importance of Angle and Direction

A beard transplant that ignores growth direction produces hair that lies flat, sticks out at odd angles, or swirls in the wrong direction as it grows. The upper lip grows slightly downward and outward from the philtrum. The chin hair grows primarily downward. The jaw and cheek hair grows in a wider arc that must be mapped individually for each patient.

At our Bristol clinic, surgeons plan each zone of the face before any grafts are placed, mapping the angle and direction for each implantation site. This zone-by-zone planning is what separates a natural-looking result from an obviously transplanted one.

Graft Counts for Beard Transplantation

A small patch fill covering one zone, such as a gap in the chin or moustache, may need only 200 to 600 grafts. A comprehensive beard build covering the moustache, chin, jaw, and both cheeks typically requires 1,800 to 3,500 grafts. Your surgeon will map the target area and calculate the exact requirement at your consultation in Bristol.

What Happens on the Day

Beard transplantation is performed under local anaesthetic as a day procedure. You arrive at our Bristol clinic in the morning. The donor area on the scalp is trimmed and anaesthetised. Follicles are extracted using the FUE punch technique, then the facial recipient area is anaesthetised and implantation begins. The full session takes between four and eight hours depending on graft count. You go home the same day.

Recovery After a Beard Transplant

Small scabs form at the implantation sites across the face and at the scalp donor zone. Both settle within 10 to 14 days. The transplanted beard hairs shed at 3 to 6 weeks. This is normal. Growth restarts at 3 to 4 months and matures fully by 12 months. The beard can be trimmed and shaped normally once the surgeon confirms healing is complete, usually after 3 to 4 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A beard transplant uses FUE to move follicular units from the donor zone on the scalp (usually the back or sides of the head, or occasionally the chest) to the face. Grafts are placed into micro-channels created in the beard area at the precise angle and direction that matches the natural growth pattern for each zone of the face. At our Bristol clinic, the moustache, chin, cheeks, and jaw can all be treated in the same session.

The procedure suits men with patchy beard growth, thin facial hair, or scarring that prevents hair growth in certain zones. It is also chosen by trans men seeking to develop facial hair beyond what testosterone therapy has achieved. The ideal candidate has a stable donor area on the scalp with sufficient density to supply grafts without thinning the donor zone.

Graft counts vary widely. A small patch fill in one zone might require 200 to 500 grafts. A full-coverage beard from moustache to jaw, including the cheeks, can require 2,000 to 3,500 grafts. Your surgeon will count the area and estimate the graft requirement at your consultation in Bristol.

When performed correctly, yes. The key is angle and direction. Beard hair grows at very specific angles in each zone of the face, and those angles change significantly from the upper lip to the chin to the jaw. Getting the implantation angle right in each micro-zone is the most technically demanding part of the procedure. Our surgeons plan each zone individually before any grafts are placed.

Small scabs form at each implantation site and fall away within 10 to 14 days. The implanted hairs shed at 3 to 6 weeks, which is normal and expected. Regrowth begins at 3 to 4 months. The full beard result, with the hair at its natural thickness and length potential, is visible at 12 months.

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic as a day case. You go home the same day. The donor zone on the scalp recovers within 10 to 14 days. The face shows small scabs for the same period, which most patients manage by not shaving until cleared by their surgeon. Most patients return to work within 3 to 5 days.

It was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Naturally, I was unsure on which organisation to choose for the procedure, but HSHTC came across as professional and caring, as well as having a wide range of availability. There are negative reviews on all businesses, and this drives customers like myself away. However, something told me this would likely be someone with unrealistic expectations, or not reading into the procedure as a whole. I chose to ignore the negatives and read the positives. Sara the coordinator was absolutely amazing! She outlined everything and made it clear of what is expected and what is not. After a great consultation, I was passed to the next stage of meeting surgeon Dr Ditta. He presented extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does, so I decided to go ahead with the procedure. The surgery day was expected to be a long, but rewarding day. It started with having to shave my head (mandatory requirement for this procedure). I’d say to anyone the thought is worser than the event, and to just do it for the positives that will follow. Dr Ditta and his team were extremely caring and sensitive, especially with briefing before any painful situations pre anaesthetic. After that, I was allowed to top up when requested and leave them to do what they do best. The day as a whole was enjoyable and interesting to speak to the team to learn more about the procedure and get to know them. Lunch was provided (yay). It was lovely of them to offer, and you definitely need to eat mid procedure to keep energy levels. At the end of the day, I was given clear instruction of how to have the best success rate. It was through a video and in person. If you have questions, ask as it’s what the team is there for. The first few days of recovery can be quite awkward and uncomfortable, but I’d recommend booking 2 weeks off work to fully recover and let the grafts set. Once you get use to the sleeping situation, it’s easy and a lovely break from reality (put pillows below your knees and stack below head for pure comfort!). The aftercare products was extremely useful and easy to use. The grafts will fall out after a few weeks, it’s expected and you’re told this plenty of times!! Having a healthy lifestyle makes your hair grow quicker and thicker, so swap your diet to good healthy hair foods. When your transplanted hair grows back, it’s an amazing feeling, but only the beginning. As the months pass by, you’ll notice a massive improvement. During this process, you’ll have regular aftercare and the chance to raise any concerns. I personally didn’t have any issues and was just grateful to still be in contact and told everything is going as it should. I’m 6 months post surgery and I’m seeing the benefits hugely, and it’s not even reached maximum results yet, as this is one year. Thanks for an amazing service!

Having given some time and thought about having a Hair Transplant, I contacted Harley street hair transplant clinics. The consultant (Sara) explained everything regarding the procedure with Dr.Ditta and the technicians. From the beginning, Dr.Ditta explained the days events and how the procedures would be done beginning with taking a photo of my head and showing me where the grafts would be taken from and where they would be placed. The procedures would be done and completed in two parts, with a lunch break in between. Once completed, Dr.Ditta went through the aftercare, explaining what to do each day for 10 days. I was given capsules, shampoo, sponge, neck pillow for sleeping with and information regarding how to look after my hair. Dr. Ditta and his team were welcoming and friendly ensuring I was looked after throughout both parts of the procedure. Sara maintained regular contact to make sure recovery was going well. The results were great, patience is needed as the grafts start to grow, and then you can see the results. Extremely happy with everything, from start to finish.

Would highly recommend! Everything went very smoothly, communication was excellent throughout. I travelled from Edinburgh to Manchester for the procedure and all travel and accommodation costs were covered. Dr Ditta explained everything clearly and delivered clear and detailed post-op instructions. I was delighted with the whole experience and results so far are very promising!

Overall, my experience at the clinic was positive. Dr. Ditta was exceptional — he made me feel comfortable and at ease throughout the procedure, and his professionalism was truly reassuring. However, I was disappointed with one member of the team who, in my opinion, did not fully follow health and safety protocols. She had her hair down without a surgical cap and was using her phone while wearing gloves, then proceeded to touch my hair without changing them. This raised concerns about hygiene and cross-contamination. Her manner was also not very pleasant, which made the experience less comfortable. Although I was initially worried about the risk of infection, I felt more at ease by the end of my visit. I hope the management reviews this matter to ensure that strict hygiene and professional standards are consistently maintained. Aside from this, I was very satisfied with Dr. Ditta’s care and look forward to seeing my results.

Dear Team. Following my hair transplant last Saturday I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the team, for making my journey as pleasant as possible. From the first consultation, to having my hotel booked, to the procedure itself, I couldn’t have been more impressed. Finally a big thank you to Doctor Ditta and the team, who were so kind when I felt unwell, making me drinking chocolate and reassuring me throughout the process. Add to this, their expertise and professionalism, what more can one ask for? I look forward to the final part of my hair transplant next year. Once again a big thanks to you all. Kind regards Keith Yates

All great from start to finish. Sara with the introduction was very warm and personable, Dr. Ditta and the staff very professional and did a great job in the day of surgery, and Yannis and Stuart were great in the aftercare and checking in appointments.

Before the procedure I had online and face to face consultations with no obligations. These gave me all the information I needed and really put me at ease and gave me the confidence to proceed. Everyone was really knowledgeable and friendly and clearly very experienced. Booking the procedure was quick and easy and I got a date that suited me. The procedure itself went really smoothly I was able to put headphones in and listen to podcasts and was very comfortable. Afterwards I was given really detailed notes on what to do and what would happen and everything went exactly as planned. It was so reassuring knowing that advice was only a text message away and responses were always immediate. I'm two weeks post procedure now and everything has gone back to normal and the recovery is going just as planned. I'm so glad I did this and chose Harley Street Hair Transplant!

Great clinic with friendly and experienced team. I wanted my surgery done in the UK and found the clinic on Google. Process started with virtual consultations with patient advisor and then with the surgeon. FULL costs were given up front, with good finance options available. On the day I designed a new hairline with the surgeon and ended up getting about 1600 grafts iirc, which was good value for money. Clear pre- and post-op instructions given and recovery has gone as expected. Now waiting patiently for regrowth :) - Grant
