DHI Hair Transplant in Bristol
At Hair Transplant Bristol, DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is offered as a precision refinement of the FUE extraction method. Instead of first creating all recipient channels and then placing grafts into them, DHI uses a specialised implanter pen (Choi pen) that creates the channel and places the graft simultaneously. This single-step approach gives the surgeon precise control over angle, direction, and depth at the point of implantation.

How DHI Works
Follicular units are extracted from the donor area using the same FUE punch technique. The extracted grafts are then loaded individually into the Choi implanter pen. The surgeon uses the pen to pierce the recipient skin and deposit the graft in one motion, setting the angle and direction with each individual placement.
Because channels are not pre-cut, there is no gap between channel creation and graft placement. Grafts spend less time outside the body in the open channel, which can improve viability in some cases. The approach also allows implantation into existing hair without the need to shave the recipient area, which matters for patients who need to maintain coverage throughout the process.
DHI vs FUE: Which Is Better?
Neither is categorically superior. DHI offers advantages in precision and in cases where implantation into existing hair is needed. Standard FUE with pre-made channels is often faster for large graft sessions and allows the surgeon to plan the entire recipient zone layout before any grafts are placed. At our Bristol clinic, we select the technique based on your case, not as a default setting.
Who Benefits Most From DHI?
DHI is particularly well suited to:
- Hairline restoration where angle precision is critical
- Temple and temporal peak restoration
- Patients who cannot shave the recipient area ahead of surgery
- High-density work in small zones
For large-area coverage across the mid-scalp and crown, your surgeon may recommend standard FUE or a combined approach.
Recovery After DHI
Recovery follows the same general timeline as FUE. Small scabs at implantation sites settle within 10 to 14 days. Transplanted hairs shed at 3 to 6 weeks. Regrowth starts at 3 to 4 months. Full density is visible at 12 to 18 months.

Frequently Asked Questions
DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is a modified form of FUE where extracted follicles are loaded directly into a specialised implanter pen (Choi pen) and implanted without first creating the recipient channels. At our Bristol clinic, DHI is used for cases where precise angle, direction, and density control are paramount, particularly hairline work and temple restoration.
In standard FUE, channels are created in the recipient area before grafts are placed. In DHI, the implanter pen creates the channel and places the graft simultaneously. This reduces the time grafts spend outside the body, can improve graft survival in some cases, and gives the surgeon more precise control over implantation angle and depth.
DHI is not universally better than FUE. It offers advantages in density and angle control for certain procedures, particularly at the hairline. For large-area coverage, standard FUE is often preferred because it allows more grafts per session. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate technique for your specific case at consultation.
DHI is particularly well suited to patients seeking high-density hairline work, temple restoration, or coverage of smaller areas where angle precision is critical. It is also preferred by some patients for whom placing grafts into existing hair (without shaving) is important.
Recovery after DHI follows the same general timeline as FUE. Small scabs at the implantation sites settle within 10 to 14 days. Transplanted hairs shed at 3 to 6 weeks before regrowing. Full results are seen at 12 to 18 months.
DHI can be slightly more resource-intensive per graft due to the implanter pen technique and the precision it requires. We provide a personalised fixed-price quote at your free consultation in Bristol based on your graft count and the method recommended for your case.
